Chapter 9

I turned, and found Miriam smiling at me. “Hello, Miriam,” I said. “I didn’t know you were involved in the fair.”

“Oh, honey, I’m involved in any number of New Orleans projects and charities. That’s one of the things that keeps me young. I don’t have time to grow old. It’s a secret that busy people don’t share. I take it you’re one of the vendors advertised by the fair.”

“I am,” I said. “Richardson’s Antiques has been a vendor for many years.”

“I’d like to say I’m too young to remember, but we both know better. Now, I have to go say hey to some other vendors. But if you need anything, just shout. I’m here to help.”

With that, Miriam moved along, and I was left wondering just how I kept running into her. I couldn’t help but wonder if fate were pairing us for some reason. What was I supposed to learn from her? Before I could answer my own question, the breakfast was called to order. It was time for the annual rules and pep talk. Most of the people in the room had heard it all before. But the rules had to be laid out for the newbies. I listened, and I didn’t listen. I was wondering about the murders and Gregory and what was happening in my little corner of the quarter. Life was always exciting in New Orleans, but not murder-exciting. That was not something to get fired up about.

The meeting ended on schedule, and I made sure I met Miriam as I moved toward the exit.

“Miriam,” I said. “My friend, Penelope says you’re a regular at Hazel’s Shear Magic. Since everyone remarks about how youthful you look, I was wondering if Shear Magic has anything to do with it.”

“Well, never underestimate the value of a flattering hair style and unblemished skin. And the secret to good skin is tautness. You can look at a person’s neck and know their age. Sagging neck skin is a sure giveaway, even if the face looks young. And the way to have taut skin is to never get fat. Of course, you don’t have to worry about that. But trust me, Helga, mother nature loves to lard on the fat as you we age. Before you know it, you can’t see your toes. And it’s not just belly fat either. The neck puts on a few inches, and old skin is not elastic skin. It doesn’t shrink. It merely sags. Look after your hands too. They betray the years.”

“That’s excellent advice. Of course, you don’t need a reason to work on your looks.”

“Sweetie, we all need to work on our looks, or else your partner goes looking for something younger. Not that they can be blamed—too much. Some days, I feel like the Evil Queen in Snow White. I’m always fending off younger and prettier women. Well, I was, before...well, before Richard died. You know, I wish I could bottle what makes young women so attractive. If I could, I’d be a zillionaire.
